Why does water in a clear plastic bag keep flies away.?

While attending a cook-out at a friends house, i notice that he had water in clear bags hanging around, he said they keep the flies away.Sure enough no flies !Why does water in a clear plastic bag keep flies away.?
Yes I know why..lol i have asked this at the county extension agency...Flies have hundreds of eyes..and the reflectiveness off of the plastic and water, almost like a prismatic effect, mirrors thierself and confuses them..they tend to evade the situationWhy does water in a clear plastic bag keep flies away.?
Hydrophobic flies?

Now if you tell us that after removing the bags of water, a bunch of flies showed up, I might start to wonder if you're onto something. And if you can repeat that in about a dozen different locations, I'd rush off and patent that one!
I had never heard of that but I'm going to try it.
Ok, now I assume they were open?? Wonder if it works on mosquitos
if what you say is true ? , your friend should patent this at once .

Hurry B/4 someone else does .
might be the reflections of light throughout the water that keeps them away, flies are usually attracted to darker areas and the water would be magnifying light rays from all over.

just a guess
Gee Whiz! I am 48 years old, and I have seen the BBQ places use this at the back door to the kitchens ever since I was a kid!

Before plastic bags became popular they used 1 gallon glass pickle jars.

Must just be a Southern Thang!
