I am playing soccer next fall, though, and so I don't irritate it before it's fully healed, can I just get a clear, plastic barbell put it then? (We can't have metal jewelry of any kind on the field.)

Well, you can't heal piercings with plastic jewelry. But you can use tygon or PFTE. Either should be okay, just see if your piercers stocks jewelry made of those materials, will special order something for you, or will let you bring in one of tose types of pieces.Can I get a clear plastic retainer put in when I get my industrial pierced?
Um, no. You cannot be pierced with a retainer unless it is made from glass. I have no clue if they make glass industrial barbells. Second, many piercers will not fit a new industrial with a bar, as they are usually not long enough to accommodate swelling and they begin to pinch. They usually put two separate rings or studs in the holes and once it heals you can put a barbell in.
Seriously, if this piercing will not fit your lifestyle don't get it done. Jewelry should not be worn when playing sports to begin with, but a new piercing, plus getting knocked around, plus getting dirty is a recipe for disaster.

what you can do like suggested get a PTFE barbell and get that put in
