Digital Optical Audio Cable - Do I take the little clear plastic things off the end?

I just bought a digital audio optical cable... and it has these little plastic things covering the metal part, do I remove those before I put them in the slots?

I actually installed some, but the sound sometimes cut out until I removed the little plastic dust-cap from the metal tips.
