Plus it is developing holes? Why did my dentist give me a clear plastic retainer instead of the metal type from the late 90's?
the metalm ones do work betterWhy did my dentist give me a clear plastic retainer instead of the metal type from the late 90's?
Not sure, but my guess would be that the metal retainer is very hard on the teeth not being protected inside the retainer.
The hard metal could be damaging to the finish on the rest of your teeth.
The new plastic one likely isn't as durable, so you will get holes (especially if you grind your teeth badly), but it will be much kinder to the rest of your mouth.
Once you have already had the impression made of your teeth (as you did the first time to get this plastic retainer), it should be much less expensive for them to cast your next retainer since that work was already done.
You should ask the question to your dentist and question if there are any better methods for your issues. Perhaps there is another kind of material, design, etc. that would suit you better.
Good luck.
